What Do I Need To File My Taxes?

We know that not every taxpayer’s situation is the same. Each requires a tailored approach that our team can help manage for you. When it comes time to file your tax returns, the below list is a good place to start in terms of items to bring in with you for your scheduled tax appointment with our team:

Prior Year Tax Return Copies

At Max E. Gilman, CPA, we will review up to three past years of your federal and state income tax returns at your first appointment. We may be we able to find mistakes/omissions on prior returns, getting you back additional refunds.

Income Statements

Available W-2, 1098, 1099 & schedule K-1 forms All investment-related expensesPurchase date & total investment for any stocks or property soldEducation scholarships If you sold stocks or mutual funds, please provide a spreadsheet/list showing:The date(s) you purchased each item(s) soldTotal purchase price of each item sold. Do not assume your cost information is provided on Form 1099

Personal & Dependent Information

Social Security or ITIN Numbers with the date of births of any dependents Alimony payments with ex-spouse SSNChildcare payment records with licensed provider’s ID number(s)The amount of Economic Stimulus Payments received for 1st and 2nd rounds

Itemized Deductions

These include but are not limited to: 1. Mortgage interest, real estate & personal property tax records2. Casualty & theft losses3. Amounts of state & local income tax paid in prior years 4. Unreimbursed job related expenses (travel, tools, cell phone charges, uniform cost/cleaning, luggage, services fees, trade journals, meals & entertainment)5. Job search/moving expenses6. Records of cash/non-cash donations to religious institutions, schools & other charities

Retirement, Education and Healthcare

Records of any contributions to IRAs, HSAs & other retirement plansRecords of tuition and other higher education expenses (books, computers, etc) Form 1095-A if you received health insurance from an Exchange (State or Federal)Marketplace exemption certificate if you applied for and received an exemption from the Exchange

Foreign Nationals on a F-1 or J-1 Visas

Your permanent address where you are a citizenYour F-1 / J-1 VISA numberThe actual dates entered / left the United States for corresponding tax yearThe number of days you were in the United States for the previous three tax years

Self-Employment

Gross self employment income for the tax year and your applicable expenses categorized and summarized by the type of expense (i.e. advertising, equipment, supplies, etc). Please summarize the rent you paid for business purposes during the tax year and your landlord’s name and address.

Foreign Nationals on a F-1 or J-1 Visas
